Shore Deana Lancaster News Reporter dlancaster@nsnews.com IN the next five months 5,000 Canadians will snow- mobile, ride, ski, run and rollerblade to mark the opening of the longest shared-use recreational trail in the world. : Trans Canada Trail has its origins in an idea devel- oped cight years ago. Since then, trail councils in each province and territory across the country have worked to turn the idea into reality: a trail that spans the country and can accommodate a mul- titude of activities. The trail is almost finished now, and it's 16,100 kilome- elfes Thursday, p es dof inclu 0,000 miles) long. o mark the openme of the ual in September, the Trans Canada Trail Foundation has planned Relay 2000 — the longest trail relay in the world. On Feb. 19 water was drawn from the Arctic Ocean and last Friday in Victoria it was drawn from the Pacific Ocean, In May, water will be collected from the Adantic Ocean. During the next five months the water will be passed from carrier to carrier, through communities across the country to meet in Ottawa, where all three vessels of water are to be poured into the Trans Canada Trail Fountain on Sept. 9. Tomorrow, the water trav- els the North Shore section of the trail, and a full slate of cel- ebrations and activities is scheduled WES am.: The water arrives in Horseshoe Bay trom Vancouver [sland via the Nanaimo Bathtub, The celebration will be hosted by West Vancouver Mavor Kon Wood and will feature live entertainment by the BC Boys Choir.
