Langley Vimy Ridge veteran dies after his 100th birthday WEST VANCOUVER lost a longtime resident and well-loved friend with the June 14 death of Ernest John (Jack) Body. A veteran of Vimy Ridge, Mr. Body had been living at Beacon Hill Lodge since 1978, and ccle- brated his 100th birthday there Feb, 28 of this year. Mr. Body was born in Tenter- ton, England, and immigrated to To:onto in 1906. A few years later, he moved to Cragston, Alberta, where he married his wife Muriel in 1911, After being injured in Vimy Ridge, Mr. Body returned to Canada with a disabled elbow and a stiff left leg. Mr. Body was employed as a Ernest John Body postal worker in'Edmonton atter the First World War, and transfer- red to the Horseshoe Bay Post Of- fice in 1945. Following his retirement and the 1961 death of his wife, Mr. Body became an enthusiastic traveller. He was also an avid reader who enjoyed books on war and: Cana- dian pioneers, had a _ terrific memory, and was a longtime supporter of the West Vancouver Memorial Library. ing nearly 10 years ago. Prior to his insurance career, Mr. Langley had worked for 20 years with Canadian National Railways and he spent the war years at the -Nitsilano airforce ¢epot. Following che war years, he was a member of the War Assets Corp. A former North Vancouver res- ident, Mr. Langley was also active in the North Vancouver Schools’ Band (now the Youth Band) and he was a referee with the Gordon Sturtridge Football League. Since last July, Mr. Langley had been a resident at Evergreen House at Lions Gate Hospital. Prior to his stay in Evergreen House, Mr. Langley lived at Cedarview Lodge in Lynn Valley. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret (Billie) Langley, his daughter Denise of Vernon, son David and his wife Kerry of North Vancouver, son Robert and his wife Nina of Albert Lund, four grandchildren, three sisters and one brother. A memorial service was held for Mr. Langley on July 2 at the Boal Chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services. Following the loss of his Gleneagles home to fire in 1978, Mr. Body moved to Beacon Hill Lodge. He is survived by son Robert (Robin) Bodie and his wife Rose of Vancouver, and daughter Eileen Perry of Saltspring Island.
