some of his unrecorded “songs” (lyrics with no

pusical notation) to Billy Bragg and the result

comes out this week. The CD is a truc collabo-
rative effort with Bragg and Wilco’s Jeif
Tweedy cach taking their share of vocals.
Natalic Merchant guests on “Way Over Yonder
in the Minor Key” and “Birds and Ships”.

Mermaid Avenue is the Concy Island block
where Guthrie’s family lived in the late f& forties.
“He's a giant in some way. Dylan’s a much bet-
ter songwriter, but he didn’t write “Bound for
Glory”. Steinbeck’s a much better novelist, but
he didn’t write “This Land Is Your Land”. If
vou really want to find somewhere to place
Woody, you have to look back to Walt
Whitman. That’s his ballpark,” Bragg told the
San Francisco Examiner last week.
