Six American scientists have brought along a 56 foot research vessel, which Levings and his colleagues will be using to traw! Vancouver har- bour for samples of fish and marine organisms. “(Before the formation of PICES) there was no mecha- nism fi the countries around the North Pacific to share ideas on the biological effects of water pollution,” said Levings. Part of the workshop’s goal, he says, is to try and establish a “harmonization” of assessment methods. “Each of the countries has a different method (of mea- suring pollution),” said ings. “We want to set up a ‘standard’ method.” At present, there are no although this remains a possi- bility.
