covered?”

An injured motorcyclist recently
won a damage award of $233,000
(which was reduced on appeal to
$114,000) because a 19-month-old
Labrador retriever escaped from its
pen and ran on to an adjoining road
where it collided with the motorcy-
cle. The collision injured the rider
and killed the dog.

The judge ruled the dog’s owners
had a duty to control the dog so it
couldn’t escape and cause injury to
people using the road.

“Damages could reach into the
millions of dollars if the injuries are
catastrophic, which could easily
have been the case with the motor-
cyclist,” Lesperance said.

He said it’s particularly important -

come into contact with pets.

the least expensive way to increase
the liability coverage on several
assets (i.c. principal residence, vaca-
tion home, boat, plane and, in most
provinces, cars.)

If you aren’t sure about your lia-
bility coverage, talk to a general
insurance agent now. For example,
raising the limit to $1 million from
$500,000 could cost as little as $10.
