4 - Sunday, July 31, 1994 - North Shore News More StatsCan propaganda Doug Collins ON THE OTHER HAND IT USED to be that Statistics Canada was used for telling us how many people and how many thingamabobs there were in this country. But it has now become part of the Ottawa propaganda machine. That became obvious when it announced that nine out of 10 women in this country had suffered violence at the hands of men — violence being anything a respon- dent said it was. Then the sleuths in question found that men didn’t do enough housework. Now another bunch of nonsense has been served up, thts time on immigration. !t is clained that immigrants are better educated than the mentally disadvantaged locals. The idea is to persuade Canadians ~ that nothing could be better for them than the 250,000 immigrants a year we neither need nor want. “Education,” is the name of the new propaganda game, Immigration Minister Sergio Marchi having said that the Canadian public needs educating as to how beneficial the system is. But the words were hardly out of his mouth hefore scandals Lit- tered the scene dike bones ata Witches’ feast. Refugee scandals. Criminal scandals. Welfare scan- dals. Then StatsCan laid dts Hittle eve and the counter-offeasive was on. Headlines blossomed. “Study debunks immigration myths.” “Study explodes prejudices against immigrants.” It was mostly bilge, And here's why. In 1978 the Liberals expanded the family reunification class. They did it to satisfy howls fram the eth- nic groups for masses of relatives to be made eligible for entry. And the relatives didn’t have to know an A from a B. Between 1946 and 1978, howev- er, most immigrants came in on the merit basis and family reunification meant that only immediate family could get in. Offspring over 18 years of age didn’t qualify as “chil- dren,” either. Long before that — in 1967 — the Liberals began admit- ting immigrants from all over the world and standards declined. Within 10 years, half of the intake was from “non-traditional” sources like India and the Caribbean. Contrary to Ottawa's promises, the unskilled came in in droves. What happened in 1978, howev- er, made it worse. People who had no qualifications at all could get in simply because they had a brother or cousin here. The mainstream media had nothing to say about that foolishness. Nor did opposition crit- ics in Parliament. There was a con- spiracy of silence. Now, even a Globe & Mail writer is asking why a 29-year-old Punjabi with a supposed Grade 10 education, no knowledge of English, and no job experience at all can get in. The answer is that he was accompanying his parents, who probably were admitted courtesy of another relative, who probably was admitted because.... It's an endless chain. In a sane system, there would be no question of admitting a 29-year- old “ehitd.” What dees such a man do here? Work ona Fraser Valley farm, probably. where he will be exploit- ed by other Punjabis. Or join the welfare queues. India in Canada. you know, Meanwhile, Mad Marchi and his accomplices now say they will pet tough with criminals and phoney refugees, Bul who made it possible for such people to get in? None other than Marchi and Co. that’s who, along with media that didn’t have the guts to tell the country what was happening. Marchi has his supporters, of course, One of them is Alan Dutton, the left-winger who has often danced at anti-Collins demon- strations. Dutton is now executive director of something calied the Canadian Anti-Racism Education and Research Society. And you can bet he’s getting lots of federal bucks in the form of grants. He too is hot on education, “Education deemed vital to educate Canadians to value of immigration” was the sucker headline over one of his emissions in the Sr, As for that StitsCan stuff, imimi- eration critic Charles Campbell points out that when you get past the politically correet rhetoric it does contain some useful informa- tion, Between 198 ft and 1991, near- ly 43¢0 of immigrants from tradi- tional sources like the U.K. and the U.S. were in professional or man- agerial jobs. THEY were better educated, But they made up only a tiny fraction of the total intake. In contrast, only 16.8% of the great mass of immi- grants from India, South East Asia, the Caribbean and Central America were in similar positions. Someone should tell Marchi about that.
