Transit driver didn’t stop for him to board BILL OIN says B.C. Transit owes him a wheelchair for cost- ing him his joystick. By Kate Zimmerman News Reporter The 59-year-old West Vancouver man, who has cerebral palsy, was waiting in his electric wheelchair for a B.C. Transit bus at. 3rd Street and Chesterfield Avenue on Saturday. The bus arrived, pulled up to the sidewalk and then, before Oin could board, it took off again. “I got angry,” said Oin. So angry, in fact, that he began to chase the US. The strain on his wheelchair cost him his joystick. When passersby saw his distress, they called the police and an ambu- lance. Oin, who because of his condi- tion has trouble making himself understood, was whisked to Lions Gate Hospital's emergency ward, with the possibility of winding up in the psychiatric department. He convinced hospital staff that he didn’t need psychiatric services. The police insisted on driving Oin home. But the entire situation was a mortifying experience for the self- sufficient man, who despite his handicaps works several days a week and constantly us.s public transit to move around. Oin is outraged at the behavior of the B.C. Transit bus driver. 66 The entire situation was a morti- Fying experience for the self-sufficient man. 99 He says the driver must have seen him — he was sitting right at the bus stop and would have been impossi- ble to miss. “I definitely feel that he should be fired,” said Oin. “You don’t need people like that on the bus.” Most of the drivers will go out of their way to help disabled passen- gers, he noted. When they don’t, the repercussions can be enormous, as they were for Oin. He owns two electric wheelchairs because of the severity of his handi- cap. He can’t afford to rely on the one he is currently using. “B.C, Transit should buy me a whole new wheelchair because of what they put me through,” said Oin. B.C. Transit spokesman Trace Acres admitted the situation sounded “very strange.” He said the company would look into Oin’s complaint. : Pa a ea ee ee A NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING.
