Be An Environmentally Wise Boater!! Petroleum products pollute water and are harmful to aquatic organisms even at low concentrations. Most petroleum products enter the aquatic environment from everyday activities, not from catastrophic accidents. Common causes of petroleum and other pollution from boating are as follows: ©Poor fuelling practices «Discharging oily bilge water and/or chemically treated bilge water ¢{mproper handling of usec crankcase oil Inappropriate discharging of sewage This pollution can be prevented if individuals take responsibility for their actions and use common sense: ®Know the capacity of your fuel tank and be careful while fueling; avoid overfills and vent discharges *Oii must be removed from bilge water using sorbent materials rather than chemically dispersing and pumping overboard Bilge cleaning chemicals and detergents do not magically remove oil from bilge waters and are toxic themselves ® Dispose of waste oil in proper waste oil facilities *{dentity and patronize marinas with environmentally superior facilities -If you have a spill, report it to 666-6100 (24hrs) or 1-800-663-3456(24his) and have sorbent materials onboard to clean it up.
