United Way aims to raise $17 million SEVENTEEN MILLION, five hundred and fifty seven thousand, eight hundred and seventy-three ... those are the dollars that thou- sands of volunteers will be work- ing over the next three months to raise for United Way of the Lower Mainland’s 1992 fundrais- ing campaign. The goal was announced by United Way’s 1992 General Cam- paign Chair Mike O'Connor, president and CEO of BC Transit, at the campaign kick-off on Wednesday, Sept. 16. LONSDALE QUAY O'Connor addressed a crowd of United Way supporters at ‘‘Car- nival Under Glass,’’ a Mardi Gras celebration held over the noon hour at the Plaza of Nations. Over 800 volunteers and donors, many from Lower Mainland workplace campaigns, took a break at lunch to attend the event, which included enter- tainment by Kathy Kidd and the Kongo Mambo group. “Its important that United Way be able to move effectively and quickly when there is urgent need,”’ explained O’Connor, who chairs a 23-member cabinet of volunteers. O’Connor urged donors who can to increase their gifts by 10% this year, to help make the $17,557,873 goal. Last year, United Way raised $17 million for its 91 member agencies and other organizations in 19 Lower Mainland municipalities. The workplace campaign runs until Nov. 26, and the public campaign wraps up on Dec. 31.
