Clean up team for race is prepared EVERY YEAR, the occurrence of the North Vancouver Rotary Club’s Great Capilano River Duck Race raises the question: what happens to those renegade ducks who make a break for the open water, to those who suffer from too little ambition, and glide to a premature finish in the riv- erside debris far before they reach the finish line? We hear more about the former category of duck; last year, one yellow rebel made its way to Sechelt before being recaptured and made headlines in the North Shore News as a result. a, Peggy Trendell- Whittaker ECOINFO However, the concerns express- ed by some people about stray ducks posing 2 pollution problem are unfounded. Convicted serial murderers be- ing transported between penai in- stitutions are not guarded by crews as vigilant as those recruited to monitor the 30,000 racing ducks. Read on: Ducks that make it to the finish line at the mouth of the Capilano River are stopped by a double line of oil-spill booms. Those hard- ened criminals who make it through the booms are set upon by three waiting Zodiacs. Backing up the Zodiacs are sev- eral cabin cruisers constantly patrolling for small winged escapees. Laggards bringing up the rear and getting caught in floating river debris are set on the right course again by members of the Underwater Archeological Society who swim alongside the ducks in wet suits. And should any duck be foolish enough to attempt an esczpe overland, it will be immediately set upon by Rotarian Race Mar- shalls or any one of their several hundred ferocious volunteers who have received specialized training in tackling ducks who jump the banks of the Capilano. Hopefully this will reassure people with environmental con- cerns that the ducks are not likely to pose pollution problems. On the contrary, funds from the race will be directed to the enhance- ment of a five-hectare park site adjacent to Maplewood Farm. So rest easy and make sure you get your race ticket soon at local shopping malls or North Shore Credit Unions. The race will be swum on Sunday, March 10. eee And speaking of pretend animals, the Body Shop has laun- ched a new line of soaps shaped like endangered species. The vegetable-based soaps in- clude a polar bear, elephant, rhi- noceros, green turtle and blue whale. They are manufactured for the Body Shop by Soapworks, a company established by the Body Shop to bring money and jobs to a depressed region in Scotland. The Soapworks factory is located in Easterhouse, a post-war housing estate in Glasgow. Twen- ty-five per cent of Soapworks’ after-tax profits are committed to a charitable trust to benefit Easterhouse residents. eee The North Shore Transfer Sta- tion has a follow-up to last week’s column on gyproc recycling: no commercial joads of gyproc are accepted at the transfer station, and only residents of the North Shore may take waste to their Riverside location. eee Reuse your laser printer car- tridge instead of throwing it out when the ink fades.
