DID YOU gather up every product
under your kitchen sink and charge
out to your driveway to wash your
family car last spring? Your inten-
tions were probably good, but us-
ing ‘‘kitchen’’ products on your
car can be disastrous.

It’s important to prepare your
vehicle for the summer months,
when the intensity of sunlight,
heat, and localized air pollution
are at a peak and can prematurely
age your car's good looks. With
some simple pre-summer tips and
just four products, you can kvep
that finish looking as good as new.

® Before rushing out to the
driveway with dish detergent in
hand, consider this — liquid
detergent is formulated for glass
and china, not metal. Just as it
strips the grease from your dishes,
it can also strip the wax off your
car. Wash the car regularly using a
\product specifically formulated for
automotive use.

© Selecting the proper car wax is
equally important. In the past,
waxes contained harsh abrasives
designed to remove the oxidation
from faded enamel on older cars.
But these harsh abrasives can
scratch the new muiti-layered and
clear coat paints found on most
cars built after 1980.

Look for a car wax designed
specifically for today's paints.
These new-generation waxes, for-
mulated with micro-fine polishing
agents, provide a great shine and
long-lasting protection.

© Also, be careful of using
household products to clean your
car’s interior. Some household
products actually warn against use
on soft vinyl and aluminum. I[n-
stead, use a multi-purpose car
cleaner which replaces all those
single product cleaners. This saves
you money, time and guarantees
safe cleaning on all automotive
surfaces with effective results.

¢ The sun's harmful ultraviolet
rays can do irreversibie damage to
your car’s vinyl, plastic and rubber
surfaces. Use a protectant that ac-
tually penetrates these surfaces,
lubricating and replacing
moisturizing agents lost from ex-
cessive exposure to the elements.

So be sure your car is properly
protected during those long sum-
mer days. Spring clean without the
kitchen sink.

Check hitch
before towing

BEFORE TOWING a boat, be
sure to read and familiarize
yourself with the instructions and
warnings supplied with the towing
vehicle and trailer.

Boating experts recommend that
you never tow a vehicle before you
check to be sure:

© coupler, hitch, and hitch ball
are the same size;

© coupler and safety chains are
safely secured to hitch;

© boat is securely tied down to
trailer, winch line is not a tie
down;

e wheel lug nuts are properly
tightened;

® wheel bearings are properly
adjusted and maintained;

® toad is within maximum load
carrying capacity;

© tires are property inflated;

® all trailer lighting is working
properly;

@ trailer brakes are properly ad-
justed and working (if trailer is so
equipped).

Check local requirements re-
garding brakes and any additional
equipment that may be required.
