originated in Germany

LIKE THE Christmas tree, the
Christmas tree ormament origi-
nated in Germany more than a
hundred years ago.

At first, ornaments were simple,
homemade — and usually edible.

It was in 1870, however, when
the first store-bought tree orna-
Ments were introduced.

Those first manufactured
Christmas ornaments were often
made of tin, or wax. Embossed
cardboard ones were popular in
the late 1800s.

By 1900, glass ornaments gained
popularity.

Imported primarily from Ger-
many, they were initially sold on
street corners and later distributed
by toy shops.

F, W. Woolworth, the widely
known five-and-dime store, was
largely responsible for the mass
distribution of glass Christmas or-
naments imported from Germany
and Japan, from the early 1900s to
the onset of the Second World
War.

Then, Corning Glass Works of
New York entered the ornament
making business by supplying glass
blanks to various newly founded
North American small companies.
