30 - Friday, Octover 21, 1988 - North Shore News TWO BRAND-NEW cars, two new engines and numerous items of new technology get star billing as Nissan raises the curtain on its 1989 lineup. Nissan’s two totally-new models are the Maxima executive-sports sedan and the sporty 240SX, of- fered as both a coupe and a fastback. The new Maxima is longer, roomier and sleeker than any previous luxury sedan bearing this name. It shares nothing in com- mon with its predecessors, other than its smooth, three-litre V6 engine. However, this has been further refined to yield 160 horse- power. Although the aerodynamically sleek 240SX replaces the 200SX as Nissan’s medium-priced sports coupe, it is entirely new from the ground up. It is also the first production Nissan to incorporate a new multi-link rear suspension first us- ed in experimental cars like Mid-4 and Arc-X. It makes 240SX excep- tionally nimble, manoeuvrable and “forgiving’’, even under difficult driving conditions. The interior of the 240SX is ultra-modern. Despite this, its wraparound layout and body- hugging seats are thoroughly prac- tical, comfortable and convenient for drivers and passengers alike. Nissan was the world’s first automaker to offer a production version of Head Up dashboard display in Japan this past spring. Now, it brings this proven safety feature to North America as an option on certain models of 240SX and Maxima. Head up display was first used in jet-fighters. In Nissan’s new cars, it projects the speedometer readout onto a specially treated patch of windshield. this lets the driver check his or her speed without glancing away from the road ahead. Two new 12-valve, four-cylinder engines also make their debut in the 1989 Nissan lineup. Photo submitted THE 1989 Nissan 240SX optional intrumentation with head-up display. A big but lively and smooth- running 2.4-litre engine powers the _240SX — hence the car’s name. It generates plenty of torque and an estimated 140 horsepower. The base-model Pulsar XE sports coupe, plus all Sentras — sedan, coupe and wagon — are powered by a new 12-valve 1.6-litre engine.
