THE MOVIE Fatal Attrac-
tion left me jumpy for days.
The morning after 1 saw it, I
looked up from the paper in
a line-up at a procery store
aud saw 8 woman standing
behind me who looked ex-
actly like the psycho lady in
the movie, and I jumped a
foot. :

I mean, it was a bolt of real
fear! Terror lest she suddenly whip
out a butcher knife and start jabb-
ing me, like she did the poor guy in
the movic.

This is a testimony, in part, to
the skills of modern filmmakers.
The acting, the special effects, the
camerawork — they all conspire to
make what is happening on screen
so realistic that even jaded cus-
tomers like you and me can be

tricked one more time into
suspending our judgments about
reality. .

But there was more to Fatal At-
traction than cinematic gimmickry.
The characters thrown bloodily
together on the screen were power-
ful archetypes represenring our
sexually beleaguered times.

Or at least that’s what I’ve read.
And it makes sense.

I'm a lapsed Catholic, so there
may be some uncrasable condition-
ing that makes.me expect retribu-
tion for sin. This movie certainly
fulfilled my deepest fears, if | have
any.

And that's it! Fear! Danger!

Sex is a big, heavy thing again.
It has got past its Age-of-Porn
promise of being casual and casy.

tween young people nowadays is
their duration and seriousness, Not
all that Jong ago, certain amount
of playing the field, as we guainthy
called it, was presumed.

Today, even my most deter-
minedly bachelor friends seem to
be tending toward monogamous
relationships. De facto marriages,
let us call them. Everybody's back
is to the wall.

Sex and doom have been poten-
tially related all along, of course,
Nothing new there. But formerly,
it was mostly women who were in
danger from it, their very lives at
stake in the inevitable birthing
process that followed.

This is the biggest irony of the
post-Sexual Liberation era: that
men now are more at risk than
women.

It was this new-found sense of
the male as a more vulnerable
creature that Fatal Attraction was
touching, | think. Don't gather
from this it’s a movie about sex-
ually-transmitted disease.

I's about a whole other order of
risk, a deeper, more primitive
level. We're talking a tale of
mother bears. And a mere gonad-

crazed male caught in the middle.

The story begins with a decent-
enough husband and father being
tempted astray one weekend by a
throaty blande bouk editor of the
female variety.

Orgy time! Who among the
males in the audience could really,
mano 4 mano, say we blamed the
guy? It's a tough question, sex. It's
like religion — something a person
finally has to figure out for
themselves. One of the purposes of
life, J guess, is to figure it Gut.

In any event, you can never Iec-
tire anyone on sexual mores. It's
too private a-thing in the end.
And, besides, when it comes to
sex, people lic. I'm sorry. They do.

The husband in the movie is of
course a creep.

Great wife. Perfect kid. Still he
messes around, Just couldn't be
satisfied with heaven, ch? Idiot.
Boy, is he in for a lot of hassles
now! |

Us older and wiser males in the
audience shake our jowls. The
younger guys no doubt simply
drool. Someday they'll learn, we
sneer,

Sure enough, we begin to find

ourthe woman is 4 psychopath, ao
matter what her lawyer might say.
There's no reasoning with her. She
won't let go, Our hero has got
himself into a sexual tar-baby en-
counter.

The spurned woman slashes her
wrists and bleeds all over him,
sends him lurid tapes, boils his pet
rabbit, throws acid on his BMW.
kidnaps his kid and tries to gut his ;
wife, who blows her away in the
end.

Talk about right-wing scripts!
The moral is: don*t mess around
even for a minute, guys, look what
could happen! You can never tell,
with women, They're loony too. /
And dangerous — never forget
that!

Well, of course, this is a i
disgusting, reactionary portrayal
of modern North American
womanhood and the producers
should be arrested for playing, so
shamelessly to a general fear that
fidelity is now like pregnancy once
was: something you can’t just be a
little bit, @ ‘
