Lower thermostat means

lower home-heating costs

ANNUAL HEATING costs rise by
about five per cent for every
degree Celsius that a thermostat is
set above 20°C over a 24-hour
peri d.

The good news is that the
reverse is also true — by reducing
the thermostat setting from 22°C
to 20°C, your fuel bills are reduced

by about 10 per cent.

The most common thermostat
found in homes with central
heating systems (furnaces) is the
manual 24 V unit. Ifthe air is
cooler than the thermostat setting,
the thermostat will turn on the
furnace until the air reaches the
desired temperature.

To keep the house most comfor-
table, a therinostat should be
located in an area not subject to
extremes of heat or cold. For ex-
ample, when the stove, oven or
fireplace is in use, a thermostat
placed in the kitchen or near iat
fireplace will sense that the entire
house is warmer than it is.

DESIRED TEMPERATURE

Similarly, the air around a
thermostat installed in a drafty
drea will be cooler Chan in the rest
of the home. Both these locations
make it difficult to maintain the
desired temperature and comfort
throughout the house.

Dust and lint on the thermo-
stat’s temperature sensors will af-
feet the unit's response time to

temperature changes. To prevent
this, remove the thermostat’s cover
and gently dust the inside surface.

Ideally, try to keep the thermo-
stat sct as low as possible without
compromising comfort. A rule of
thum’ is to lower the thermostat
setting by several degrees at night
and when the house is unoccupied.

For example, the first person up
in the morning should increase the
thermostat setting to 20°C. If no
one will be home during the day,
the last person out of the house
should lower the setting to 17°C.

The first person home from
school or work turns the thermo-
stat back up to 20°, About a half
hour before the last person in the
family retires for the evening, he
or she should turn the thermostat
back down to 17°C.

Such a schedule takes conscien-
tious effort. Tf this routine is too
hectic, consider installing an
automatic setback thermostat,

tronic programming device on
which a daily sehedule
temperature settings can be set.

The cost of the thermostat can
be recovered in a couple of yeurs
through lower energy bills.

A couple of final hints to save
money. Be sure to turn the ther-
mostat down (never below 10°C)
when the house will be unoccupied
for extended periods. Have a
friend or relative inspect the house
regularly to avoid problems that
might arise from a power failure or
heating system malfunction,

Also, close off unused rooms
and reduce the temperiture in
them by closing vents or ducts or
turning down baseboard heaters.
Make sure the rooms are warm
enough to prevent excess conden-
sation on windows and outside
walls and the growth of mold or
mildew on these surfaces,
