Manicurist nails down business

When Legault lost her job at
Burger King, she landed a job as a
nail manicurist. She liked it so
-much, she bought the company.

Now, at 23, she admits that she
never thought about what it means
to own a business when you’re 21
and on your own.

“I just did it, 1 worked hard,
and I made it. If I had sat down
and tried to figure it all out, I

The extent of her business train-
ing was a job at McDonald’s, and

tween a manicure and a pedicure
when I started here’? three years

BOUGHT SHOP

Within a year, Legault had fig-
ured out enough to buy. Naturally

couver from the woman who had
hired and trained her.

Business is good, she said, and,

she often puts in 16-hours days:
‘‘There’s definitely a call for it.””

Legault’s clients come from a
wide variety of backgrounds, with
a wide range of. incomes. ‘‘My
youngest client is two years old. J
just give her a natural manicure;
her cuticles are really bad.”’

Her price for perfect nails is $45,
“‘and you’re allowed two broken
nails a month.” Gold nail charms
can be attached like earrings,
through a hole drilled in the nail.
Diamond charms are especially

‘We don’t get much call for it,”’
she says. ‘‘People are a little more
conservative here.

Legault said she does get a few
men in for manicures, ‘‘Dick Irwin
came in, and he was pretty cool
about it,’’ even when he was asked
what he did for a living.

The attractive brunette moved to
North Vancouver from Montreal
five years ago. She likes living on
the West Coast, perhaps because,
