nati avonal wi A NORTH VANCOUVER skater who originally did not even qualify for the Junior Canadian Men’s Figure Skating Championships ar- rived home the overall individual winner Friday, _Norm Proft said the win was the biggest in a career that has spann- ed 10 years. ‘I was thinking of retiring, but I decided to give it one more shot,”’ Proft said Friday night. The 20-year-old skater, who trains at the North Shore Winter Club, finished out of the running for the national championships when he placed sixth in the Western Canidian figure skating finals held Jaiuary in Edmonton. Only the top ‘our from that com- petition quali ied for the national championshifps, which were held Feb. 2 to7 in Ouawa. But Proft s.ipped into the na- tional championships after four- th-place finisher at the Western Canadian finals Craig Burns sprained his ankle and fifth-place finisher Colin Epp opted to com- pete only in the national champi- onship’s pairs category. Up against 14 of the country’s best skaters at the national finals, Proft finished the first day’s com- petition fifth overall after figures. He went on to finish second in the short program and clinched his overall win with a first-place finish in the competition’s long program. “I think my mental outlook was different this time,’’ Proft said. ‘I mean, I had nothing to lose. There was no stress, no pressure.”’ Proft added that his coach Cyn- thia Ulimark was one of the major reasons for his national win.
