Doug Collins ® get this straight @ THE MESSAGE is getting through to those clever people in Ottawa that we peasants do not like their immigration policies. ‘Canaaians,*’ said Employment and Immigration Minister Benoit Bouchard the other day, ‘‘are expressing a sort of fear’? about then. So something is being done about the phoney refugee scandal, at least as far as the Turks and a few African countries are concerned. Their na- tionals can’t come in unless they have visas. If you too don’t like the im- migration mess, now is the time to write to the politicians and complain, because the churches and other do-gooders are pushing like mad-to mend this horrible crack in the liberal dyke, as are axe-grinding immigration lawyers. But at least a shadow of common sense has now prevailed, As an immigration official stated of the Turkish invasion, “The Turks tell you openly that they are here for economic reasons. It is only after the Cana- dian lawyers get their hands on them that they clue into the system and claim refugee status.’’ In this case the Tories saw the writing on the wall, mainly because Quebec was in a froth over having to fork out so much welfare dough. It also saw itself becoming a suburb of Ankara. From Christmas Day to December 27 alone, more than | 700 Turkish delights flocked in to Mirabel airport to partake of the great bonanza. And although they were supposed to be poor, some of them thought a Men’s Mission { wasn’t good enough for them. They wanted the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, no doubt. Today’s “refugees” have no intention of pigging it, you see. We should offer them a word of thanks, all the same. They were the straw that broke the camel's back. In the last four months of 1986,7,000 phonies like them flew in, all with their hands out. And it’s been going on for years. Sikhs, Pakis, Portuguese, Chinese, West Indians, Sri Lankans, Africans, Latin Americans and little blue men from space, too, probably. As a country, we had ourselves to blame. Didn’t Brian Baloney get up on his soapbox when the Tamils bobbed in off their boats and yell that Canada was a light unto the world’s darkness? Nor could Ottawa plead ignorance about the situation. Its own research showed that at least 90 per cent of the refugees reaching these naive shores were -- and are -- phonies. Don't think that these new visa restrictions are an answer to the refugee racket as such. Until all overseas visitor: have to have visas, cheats will continue to fload in. All they need when they arrive is the magic password -- “I’m a refugee.’* We have invited such abuse. Ot- tawa has constantly boasted that our refugee regulations are even N. VAN DISTRICT COUNCIL iliegal suite task force takes shape NORTH VANCOUVER District Council delivered on a promise made last month to strike up a task force to find new solutions to the chronic problem of illegai suites. Terms of reference -for the task force were adopted by the Policy and Planning Committee Monday. The task force will: * Review present zoning bylaw regulations for single-family resi- dential homes as well as council policy regarding enforcement of regulations; * Review bylaw regulations and enforcement policies of other municipalities regarding illegal suites; * Consider the role of the second suite in the housing market to identify situations where a second suite should be made a legitimate use in a single-family zone as well as the impact of second suites on market values; * Consider district enforcement options and the expected result and budget impact of each option; * Recommend, where appropriate, zoning bylaw amendments and en- forcement policy changes; * Make other such recommenda- tions as deemed appropriate. Ald. Murray Dykeman voiced concern that there was no provi- sion for public meetings included within the task force terms of ref- erence. Council members on the task force include Mayor Marilyn Baker, Ald. Craig Clark, Ald. Mary Segal, with staff members including director of development By MARTIN MILLERCHIP Contributing Writer Fred Sigurjonsson and _ social planner Lenna Jones. Bum Unit #59164 more liberal than those recom- mended by the United Nations, | which would like (o see us have no immigration rules at all. Appeal boards have been disgustingly weak in applying such regulations as there are. If a foreign cop has told someone his fly is open, that’s pretty well enough to make him a refugee as | far as they are concerned. Which is not surprising, seeing that they are packed with tawyers, academics and bleeders often ia- volved privately in the immigra- } tion industry. No wonder immigration depart- ment people have thrown up their hands and said to hell with it. The Tories are not the only of- fenders in this heap, of course. All three parties are abject in their eagerness to please the ethnics. Not a single voice has been raised in parliament against the refugee racket. On the contrary. When the Tamils floated in, the NDP im- migration ‘‘critic’’ deplored the public outcry. Jt was racist, he bleated. When the Portuguese in- Mux was at its height, his Liberal counterpart objected to the Ports having to have visas. .
