Cabinetry con- structed on the job you have to rip out to remove, so it can’t be recycled, Ripping out is one thing, building new cabinets another. As a do-it-yourselfer project, profes- sionals don’t recommend it unless cabinetmaking is your hobby. Building your own normally saves neither money nor time if you add up the cost of materials and labor. On the other hand, there are ready-to-assemble cabinets on the market, and these are a good buy. Easy to put together, they are of acceptable quality and availability in a variety of finishes and styles. Certainly one way to economize is to install your own cabinets, a practice many manufacturers en- courage by producing step-by-step instructions that are illustrated and easy to follow. Many kitchen dealers, too, assist the do-it-yourselfer by providing supervision if you're working from a plan they've prepared. The plan is important. Unless you've had some design experi- ence, it’s wise to avail yourself of the expert’s knowledge of what products best solve certain pro- blems; how to lay out a kitchen so traffic flows freely; how to ac- commodate the work triangle to existing conditions or improve it by expanding or contracting the space.
