IN A country where the politicians have fewer principles than ferrets, gutlessness always wins, as can be seen in the latest federal farce involving immigration and the refugee racket. As you may have noticed, the potty parson who doubles as Minister of State for Immigration under the equally dim-witted Flora MacDonald, has declared another amnesty for illegal im- migrants, often known as refugees. Not that he calls it an amnesty. That would be too clear a sign that the immigration system, so called, has failed again. No, this is an ‘‘administrative clearance’’ designed to wipe out a large backlog. But it still means that anyone wno sneaked, lied or otherwise conned his way into Canada can stay here. At last count, there were about 21,500 such cheats waiting for the forgiving finger of Ottawa to touch their brows, And the said cheats are not Anglo-Saxons and the like. If they were, they’d be shown the door pronto. They hail from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Jamaica, China, Hong Kong and Portugal. In the Portuguese case, they are 1,500 persons claiming to be Jehovah’s Witnesses persecuted by the democratic government in Lisbon — another fiction thought up by crooked immigration lawyers and ‘‘consultants’’. Such advisers know well enough that any dumb story will gain their clients’ entry, this coun- [ try’s rulers going to bed every night praying that no one will call them racists. Only two months ago, McLean was saying he would not an- nounce another amnesty. To do so, he said, would destroy the in- tegrity of the immigration system f and reward queue-jumpers. (There are, after all, still a few im- migrants who apply properly to get in from abroad, which is what they are supposed to do.) Oh well, put it down to yet another Tory flip-flop. Since we started getting soft about so-called refugees the rules have been relaxed so much that we invite liars. Hence the prese:sice of “Jehovah's Witnesses’? who have never seen a Bible, and an even greater number of Sikhs claiming ¥ to be refugees from India. We have now given so many rights to foreigners wishing to jump the immigration rules that there should be a big sign at every Canadian dock and _ airport reading: ‘‘Hlegal immigrants and other phoneys register here. Welcome to Wimpland!"" On hearing McLean‘s glad news, nine citizens of Sri Lanka who had been on strike against their ship in Vancouver im- mediately claimed that they too were refugees. And why not? They will end up getting more money from the Canadian tax- payer in refugee allowances than | they could possibly earn at home. Most of those approved as refugees at overseas locations are not true refugees, former Immigration Minister Lloyd Axworthy admitted, they are ‘economic refugees’* who just. don’t like their own countries. In this latest fiasco, even the dorey old Globe & Mail disap- proves of what is being done, and God knows it is weak-minded where immigration i© V:ncerned. But in this case it cays “confusing life-b.\t~ liners’’. In other s. rds, ¢ are getting status thor « denied them. The minister dispenses the usual sickening guff. Under this ‘‘ad- ministratative clearance’, he says, there will still be some sort of screening process. Well, you can forget it. 1 would like a dollar for every time I have heard such nonsense from Canadian im- migration ministers. All they’re concerned about is pleasing the ethnics, and the ethnics won’t be happy until they’ve taken the place over. The refugee backlog, it should be remembered, exists only because the politicians have ar- ranged things so that the immigra- tion department is helpless to deal with the situation. If you were an immigration officer, you'd pro- | bably cut your throat. The refugee influx adds to the enormous iniJux of non-white im- migration into this country, which has long overshadowed the other sort. The destruction of English Canada that all this portends is your fault, really, because although you don’t like it you don’t rise up in wrath, either. When you'do, it will probably be too late.
