Petrik says his two-wheel- ed ordeal began when he was riding along Marine Drive July .15. at approximately 2 p.m. Taking a short cut past the tourist information booth at Capilano Road ‘and Marine, Petrik-says, a young girl ran out from the nearby bush area headlong into the handle bars of his bicycle. Surprised ‘and concerned, Petrik dismounted. The child’s father subsequently arrived, bawled out the girl .for her carelessness and assured Petrik that, yes he had seen the whole thing, _ and his child was entirely in the wrong. Petrik told the News he then rode off, somewhat shaken, but relieved that no injuries had been sustained in the accident. Suddenly, from the phone booth adja- cent to the tourist booth came angry screams and yells directed at Petrik. “Then two jock types on 10-speeds started chasing *~ me;”? says Petrik. ‘‘They were screaming at me to learn how to drive and ac- cusing me of running over - the little’ girl, Well, I took off because they looked like they were going to kill me.’ Ride as he might, Petrik NEWS photo Terry Peters BEATEN AND bruised, with a broken bike, Philip Petrik is thinking twice about bicycting on the North Shore. The North Vancouver resident, \bove, shows off the beat front wheel of his 10-speed. The bike was damaged and Petrik injurcd, including sustaining a broken wrist, by two bicycle vigilantes. was overtaken by the two cyclists who caught up to him on the west side of Lions Gate Bridge across from the Department of Highways bridge patrol of- fice. Petrik says he lost con- trol of his bicycle which crashed into cement bridge . retaining block. According to Petrik, the bicycle vigilantes then roared | threats at him, accused him again of knocking down the young girl, and refused to listen to his side of the story or consider his innocence. One of the pursuers, a five-foot seven-inch. 150- pound male with shoulder length blond hair, dis- mounted from his blue 10- speed and hurled it at Petrik. He then yelled, according to Petrik, ‘‘Now you know how it feels to get run over.” The two then rode off back . to North Vancouver. Dazed and wincing with pain, Petrik says he made his way to the bridge patrol of- fice and called West Van- couver police who artived. half an hour later. A subsequent police search of the area failed to uncover any trace of the two 10-speeders. Petrik says the incident has profoundly affected him. He says his bicycle is a total write-off, his wrist is fractured, and he no longer feels safe riding his bicycle in a community where ‘‘vigi- lantes take the law into their own hands over the smallest things without waiting to hear both sides of the story.” He adds his new job in a Lower Lonsdale restaurant could well be in jeopardy if his injuries prevent him from working. “The whole thing was just so ridiculous,’’ says Petrik, ‘““T mean they didn’t even stop to ask me what hap- ‘pened or what I might have to say. They just assumed | was in the wrong and took matters into their own hands. It’s scary really.”” West Vancouver police are appealing for information into the incident from anyone who might have been on Lions Gate Bridge or Marine Drive and seen either the accident or the resulting altercation.
