natural or man-made, you
may forget all about the
family pet. .

possibility, the British Col-

Prevention .of Cruelty to

Animals is eyeing a program
that would see groups of
volunteers in charge of
animal welfare during such a
disaster.

This is Animal Health
Week. Veterinarians across
the country are promoting
awareness of health in
animals, be they livestock or
pets. But the S.P.C.A, carry
their, concern for animals
from week to week.

Working through Support
Emergency Teams at the
provincia) and municipal

levels, the B.C.S.P.C.A.
would react to the needs of
animals in time of disaster.

Michael Weeks of the Van-
couver Regional Branch szys
it was after the Mississauga
experience several years ago
that animal welfare officials
realized a program was
needed. In Mississauga,
where thousands of people
were evacuated, some up to
three days, after a train car-
rying toxic chemicals derail-
ed, some animals were on

the verge of starving. Weeks
hopes that by rounding up
and training voluntecis ‘to
act during such disasters, the
animais need not suffer
needlessly.

Weeks reperts over 30
volunteers for his jurisdici-
tion and plans are in the
making for training. The
main task of the volunteers
would be locating and
disposing of dead animals,
treating injured animals and
impounding and feeding
