Dr. Jim Corbett said the patient died in’ Evergreen House — the haspital’s ex- tended care unit — of various causes and tuberculosis was not discovered until an autopsy was conducted. ‘“‘What happens when old people come into the hospital from nursing homes, institutions or even their own homes, 1s they get a chest x-ray upon admuis- sion. But sometimes the TB is not picked up if they're suffering from = other diseases,’’ said Corbett. “‘l wouldn't necessarily say that this ts connected to the re- cent Vancouver TB outbreak but there are many people out there with TB that we don't know about."’ He also acknowleged it was possible that testing among staff members at LGH resulted in the positive reaction of an employee. But he said many persons often react positively to a 1B test even though they are not carrying the disease He said during a tuber Se i ig GIST Ay iE AIS Or Sy Tae ah em a ya Sa ag EE AT SORES RS DSL HEARERS 2 RON ROE SS a sais Thye> fir 4 By JOANNE MacDONALD culin test the patient is actu- ally given a dose of the disease to help them build up immunity. However, chest x-rays and sputum tests can be used to determine whether the patient actually has tuberculosis. Corbett said although he does not suspect a_tuber- culosis epidemic in the area that, ‘‘when a disease falls to low levels, then it slowly starts to build up again. In the 1930s and 40s people went to a sanatorium for TB, then we gradually over- came the disease much tn the same way aS we overcame poho. And, of course, the x-ray vans that used to be in shopping centres haven't been around for 10 to 15 years "’ Corbett said tf persons suspect they have TB, to contact their physicians. He said symptoms include coughing, weight loss and loss of strength. rie Libra Libr ry: “Everyt Bears, \ i \ ~GOLF- Tee-off in Portugal Y in late February/8> atthe ” ZY N European acclaimed, tive star = Pemina Golf Resort 2 Siesigned by Henry Cotton => 2 === Join us for 14 days == =— = for only $1995..= = pased on double ——— =—— occupancy — SS => SF includes. — tours, optional golf packages, unlimited golf.
