Ancient city uncovered

Since I’ve never seen the
Cathedral when they haven't
been doing some sort of
repair work, the restoration
of the damaged South Tran-
cept isn’t remarkable. Fire-
damaged carvings and scroll-
work are piled in a cordoned
area of the North Trancept

The magnificent Rose
Window was damaged but
not beyond repair and has
been removed. One of the
frustrating aspects of the tire
is that the South Trancept
had just been completely re-
done because Death Watch
beetles had destroyed much
of the wood. This, however,
should make it easier for the

workmen - they know how it
ought to look. .
We spent several hours

touring the Cathedral, arriv-
ing mght after breakfast. It
was just as well to be indoors
- outside, the rain was backed
by high winds. A good day to
stay inside unless you wanted
to perfect your ‘‘Mary Pop-
pins’ routine

About noon, we sloshed
down High Petergate to the
Hole in the Wall pub for

books were wrong. Instead of
pirates, plundering and burn-

ing England, the Vikings
were builders and settlers,
creating thriving family

communities.

The Jorvik Viking Centre
has a touch of Disneyland
about uw. Visitors are seated
in time cars that move slowly
backwards, passing genera-
tions of ordinary people - a
newsboy, a wounded WW]
officer, costumed courtiers,
street hawkers and peasants.
Back in time until the 10th
century and the recreation of
Jorvik, complete in the
smallest detail

Even the smells! Take a
deep breath as vou pass the
tishboat'

Also included is a large

display of additional artifacts
recovered from the site and a
recreation of the scientist's
workrooms. Watch for a pla-
que placed on the site where
the York Helmet was un-
covered - not Viking, it was
probably worn by one of the
Anglo-Saxon defenders of
York during the time of Vik-
ing attacks. The helmet is on
display at the Castle
Museum.

An interesting side-light to
history. No Viking helmets
have been found tn Britain
and only a few tn Scan-
dinavia. None have’ been
found with the horns we've
come to accept as traditional.
Is at possible that the Vikings
never wore horned helmets?
What ashame.
