What I remember the best about this trip is my thick sweater and K-way jacket — and | wore those every day from start to finish! Thank goodness we had no illusions about British weather, even though the whole country had sweltered in one of the hottest summers on record. Naturally, that quit on a day roughly coinciding with our arrival. In brief, Brian and I left Vancouver aboard a British Airways flight to London on Sept. 8, equipped with two Britrail passes, hotel reserva- tions for our first and last nights (plus a couple of mid- trip nights in Scotland), two Ki ottob overnight-size bags and a sat- chel. We had shorts and bathing suits along for what we hoped would be a few days of beach time in the Channel Islands. We had a map, a rail schedule and a rough idea where we might go. We also had a couple of thousand pounds in Visa traveller’s cheques, a couple of Visa cards for emergency, a B.C. Tel ‘‘Calling Card’’ to phone home for the bad news and a spirit of adventure.
