16 TEAMS COMPETE Sutherland | osts soccer tourney SUTHERLAND SABRES and Argyle Pipers will each be fighting for secondary school supremacy this week as the provincial championships get underway on the Sutherland. Ready for any weather conditions, tournament coor- dinator Vince Alvano has eight grass fields and eight all-weather fields ready. Games start Thursday at 10 a.m. with the finals set for Saturday, December 3 at 2:30 p.m. at Lillooet Park, both for the consolation award and the provincial championship. A total of 16 teams are tak- ing part in the tournament from around British Colum- bia with Spectrum secondary school from the Island rated as top with John Oliver rank- ed number two and Burnaby Central rated as number three. Argyle is ranked fifth with host Sutherland rated as number 11. There’s little to choose bet- ween the two North Shore en- tmes based on their season records. Argyle won seven and lost two over the season while Sutherland had a 6-2 | record. The dig difference comes in goals with Pipers scoring 23 and holding thes op- ponents to six against while North Shore hosted by the Sabres scored 18 with six against. The tearns have been divid- ed into four groups of four teams in each with the two North Shore entnes in group B along with Centennial from Fraser Valley and Norkam from the Okanagan. Playing in a four team weekend tournament in Mount Vernon, Washington, Blues went down 103-83 to a strong Skagit entry that went on to easily win the two day event. Coach Neil Chester was pleased that Blues cut off the inside game from the even- tual winners but he saio at brilliant outside shooting beat his team. Mark Marter with 21 points and Dave Sidhu with 27 were top point getters for the North Shore school. Things worked a bit better on Saturday for the Blues as they downed Pacific Lutheran University of Tacoma, 71-57 with Sidhu hitung for 22 points and Marter notching 16 points and 19 rebounds. Sidhu was named to the tournament all-star team. On Friday the men take on Royal Roads at Delbrook gym in totem conference play. On Saturday Malaspina will be the visitors in the afternoon.
