“x Al6é - Wednesday, November 2, 1983 - North Shore News Narrow WV vote okays self-serve WEST VANCOUVER Council has narrowly voted in favour of the preparation of a zoning bylaw amendment that will see the full service Chevron gas station at 16th and Marine Drive transformed into a self serve gas bar and convenience store. By JOANNE MacDONALD Ald. David Finlay, Diana Hutchinson and Donald Griffiths were all in favor of the move, while Ald. Alex Brokenshire, Doreen Blackburn and Mayor Der- nck Humphreys were against It. Ald. Gordon Rowntree abstained from the vote. Council listened to representatives of both com- panies involved in the changeover — Simon Evans of Southland Canada Inc. PET CORNER (commonly known as 7-11 Stores), and Bob Farbridge of Chevron Canada. Accor- ding to Farbridge, Chevron currently has four stations in West Vancouver and is *“*most anxious to have a self serve ... due to land values, it is most difficult to rebuild in- to a full service station at 16th and Marine.”’ The proposed _ enterprise would be open 24 hours a day, a point questioned negatively by Alderman Blackburn. However, Evans Tesponded studies have shown that changing A VERY aice small Sealpoint Siamese cat is looking for a loving home. It does not fit in with the dream ... of the Ambteside commercial area.’’ Humphreys added the new gas bar would ‘‘eradicate’’ the servicing of cars in the area, and leave yet another 7-11 store. *‘In the last few years, convenience stores have proliferated to the point where there’s almost one in every block,’* said Humphreys. Councillors in favor of the rezoning said Council did not have the right to regulate the marketplace. Ald. Finlay pointed out West Vancouver Council may decide to change operating hours of stores in the future but add- ed, “‘You can’t deny conve- nience stores are often handy to consumers.’”’ Ald. Donald Griffiths agreed saying, ‘‘We can’t dic- tate to the marxetplace.”’ Under the agreement bet- ween Chevron and Southland Canada Inc., a portion of the property at 16th and Marine will be leased to 7-11 Stores. Chevron will also appoint 7-11 as the gasoline dealer at that location. And, although Farbridge could not confirm the figures, he stated gasoline on the average tends to be at least half a cent a litre cheaper at self serve stations He added the present dealer at the location in question would be re-located to another Chevron dealership A public hearing 1s to be held in connection with the resoning issue, however, 4 date has not. yet scheduled been AYLORMOTIVE OUR 24TH YEAR PROFESSIONALLY SERVICING 10°S OF THOUSANDS OF SATISFIED CUSTOMERS YOUR COMPLETE B.C A.A APPROVED “50 BAY” CENTER my pone Pin, QUALITY WORKMANSHIP © TRUSTWORTHY SERVICE - ALL GUARANTEED THE AUTOMOTIVE SPECIALISTS Qualified Technicians in Many with 20 to 40 years experience - » Automatic transmissions *® Complete general mechank al a Wheel, trame alignment & balan tng ® Collision repotr — ICBC clatme Painting & att conditioning ( ourtesy cara arranged 985-7455 > » each fleld Sites y PORE REL ESTIMATES & COINSEH TATION (PBL OM KAS SOOOETE ECR MAKINE PORN DS JAYCORMOTIVE -174 PEMBERTON.
