Se Sport Botnen at worlds AN EXPERIENCED team could allow Canada to qualify for the ’84’ Olympics. One member with that ex- perience Anita Botnen, 18, from West Vancouver, is in Budapest, Hungary with the Canadian team for the up- coming World Gymnastics Championships this week. Over thirty countries will take part in this important event, which is the qualifying meet for Los Angeles next year. Only twelve countries are eligible to compete in gym- nastics in the Olympics. The women have every chance of holding their tenth position which they reached in ‘79’. The men, with the strongest team to date, should return to the top twelve from their present 13th standing. Botnen is from the Flicka Gym Club, North Van- couver, which has produced top world gymnasts for many years. Bonme Wittmeier, 17 of Winnipeg, also a member of the team, now trains at Flicka Veteran Elf: Schlegel, 19, of Toronto will compete in her fourth World Cham pionships since 1979, in the hopes of an Olympic com petition. She now trains at the University of Florida. A third B.C. registered member is Gige Zosa, 15, of California. A total of nine women have gone to Budapest, but only six will be selected for the competition. The other names are Anne Marie Deser- res, 17 of Ste. Therese, Janice Kerr, 15, Thornhill, Andrea Thomas, 15, Markham, Lesley Gould 18, London and Leanne Gallant, 17, Mississauga. in the ‘8!’ World cham- pionships, Schlegel, Witt- meier and and Deserres finished in the top 36. Botnen made the team at the last minute. At the recent World Student Games in Edmon. ton, Schlegel, Botnen and Deserres were three members of the bronze medal team for Canada. They finished behind USSR and Romania. Coaches for the women's team are Mike Vossen of Flicka Gym Club and Mary Lee Palmer of Toronto. Maria Tyndall of Van- couver, one of the world’s in- ternational Brevet judges, returns to her home town of Budapest to judge in the competition. During her years as a student at the University of Budapest she was a competitor with the Hungarian National Physical Education team. She _ has judged at three Olympics. The men’s team suffered a set back last week when Phillipe Chartrand, was in- jured during a training camp in France. He was flown home for a knee operation. Warren Long, 27 of Universi- ty of Saskatchewan, will compete in his fourth World Championship. He placed in the top 36 in the previous three. Three members of the team train at York Universi- ty. They are Dan Gaudet, 24, Frank Nutzenberger, 24, and Allan Reddon, 2!) Other members are Marshall Gar- field, 25 and Yves Dion, 24 trom Laval and Brad Peters, 20 from University of Toronto Long. Peters and Nutzenberger were members of the Canadian team that finished fifth overall at the recent World Student Games in Edmonton.
