AS - Sunday, September 19, 1982 - North Shore News inquiring reporter Pe by Ellsworth Dickson The recent discovery of a number of grizzly murders has _ got people talking about capital punishment again. As these horrible crimes become seemingly more prevalent, the public is questioning the deterent effect of the courts. Today’s question is: "What are your thoughts on capital punishment ?”’ I believe most Canadians want capital punishment. It is the politicians who and we have pensioners eating dog food. There is something very wrong here. Barbara Solis North Vancouver I believe we need capital punishment. I have lived in Spain and | think their low murder rate ts due to the deterrent of capital punishment. Already well known for his right-of- centre politics, Ball at times appeared to be running the meeting rather than ap- pearing in front of a group of concerned citizens to state his platform. Another candidate with aldermanic experience is Joan Gadsby, who served from 1973 to 1975 on District council. Joining her are Craig Clark, Bruce Mannering and - Neil MacLean. A _ sixth candidate, Douglas Vincent, is running for the school board. A common theme through all their presentations is fiscal restraint, coupled with “responsible government” — that is, an end to the left- IVISICALC iVISIDEX IVISIFILE 'VISIPLOT iVISITERM right split which currently creates intolerable problems and tensions on council. But although the terms “middle of the road”, “non- partisan” and “responsible” were bandied around throughout the two hour meeting, each candidate contrived to convey sym- pathy if not outright support for conservative politics. As Ball put it: “I regret NoVVA rose its ugly head a couple of years ago. I un- derstand that to qualify for support you have to be out there (gesturing to the left)... where ['m not.” The candidates’ speeches sat well with the 30 TAGG members listening. Their response clarified some of the ambiguous wording in the stated TAGG philosophy, which includes: ® Good government acts for the benefit of the people and allows every individual IVISISCHEDULE iVISITREND/PLOT IPFS: iPEFS: IPFS: PES: IPFS: WATSON INSPECTOR 'LOCKSMITH \CONSOLIDATOR IWIZARDRY 1 IWIZARDRY 2 7, iC.O.R.P.
