‘Statehood’ needs the Queen

Dear Editor:

Seeing that you are
providing an outlet — for the
spleen of certain citizens, I
would like to comment.
Replying to M. Garland,
J.E. McDonald and DC.

Grey regarding the
monarchy.
I believe also that

Canadians should recognize
their own head of state, if
not the present Queen of
Canada, perhaps that other
foreign dignitary preferred

among Canadians, Pierre
Trudeau?
But as my Insh grand-

mother used to caution:
“One can always stoop and
pick up nothing.” Un-
fortunately Canada, since
the arrival of Champlain, has
had little else in the way of
national accomplishment
worth picking up — apart
from that Prairie songstress,
Sarah Binks.

In our three hundred year
odd history (unlike back-
ward Europe during the
same period), we have not
come up with literary greats;
no Shakespeare, Goethe,
Cervantes; no musicians
likely to kiss the hem of
Mozart, Beethoven, Arne,
or Haydn's cloaks. Certainly,

I-cannot recall any Elizabeth
the First, or Drake, or
Raleigh, or evea a Churchill
of the Gatineau. or the

Rockies. Where outside of
Best are the Canadian
Edison, Newton, Darwin, or
Huxley?

The two cultures of
Canada seem _  remarkedly
inept in paralleling
achievements being un-
dertaken in “backward”
Europe.

Why is that? As D.C. Grey
opines: “A Canadian who
resides in Canada would give
us a feeling of national pride
and unity so sadly lacking in
our country , today.”
Following Rojand Michener,
we have had potential heads
of state. One becomes tired
of gentlemen who remind
one of a manikin decked in
“off the rack” specials. Not
much to kindle patriotism in
that image for me, I regret to
say.

One of your correspon-
dents refers to Canada as a
“modern country”. But,
what is modern about us?
Where are our
achievements? That is apart
from supplying Candu
reactors to fascist juntas.

Harassed driver

Dear Editor:

As part of my business I
drive extensively throughout
our beautiful city. Last
summer I drove in many
European countries. In none
of these countries however
did I feel exposed to what
many of our own citizens
and tourists here at home
consider harassment. By
now you will probably know
I am referring to certain
speed limits and radars.

Whether the above
concerns the authority
responsible for establishing
speed limits or for enforcing
it, their stationing of young
officers in private driveways,
hiding them behind trees
with pointed toys at innocent
passersby and so day in and
day out clearly demonstrates
the fact that someone
somewherc has lost sight of
his priorities.

Sneaking up in such a

manner, and to such extent,
on usually safe dnvers then
ponalizing them for slightly
excecding a

speed limit

which in most cases most of
us consider to be
ridiculously low appears to
be somewhat out of line.

Among others I am
especially referring to
Straight flat four Jane
highways where the speed
limit for no apparent reason
happens to be only 50 or 55
kph.

Whenever I happen to be
driving on one of these roads
and highways noticing
oncoming traffic flashing
their headlights warning me
of radar ahead, I cannot help
but think that there are
thousands of our fellow
citizens who feel extremely
and unreasonably harassed
as I do.

I agree with some of my
neighbours, tourists, and
business colleagues that such
extreme activities by the
police are cheap shots and in
some cases an open
provocation. This is cer
tainly not my idea of what
we pay our police to do.

diplomacy? In economics?
In resources? Or am Il
misinterpreting the modern
unemployment, lack of
industry, depletion of
resources? There was a time
when, in the fall, one could
literally walk across the fish
trying to run the Fraser.
When Canada was called
upon for first-line lumber
from now depleted forests.
When the second world war
ended the whole defeated
world clamored for entry
into our national paradise of
law and order, replete with
loyalties centred on the
ideals for which the Queen
of Canada stood.

Can those same emotions
be attributed today?

National heads of state are
not appointed: they come
about because they reflect
the contentment of the
people comprising the state.
Attesting the opimion were
the expressions of loyalty of
the thousands who appeared
at the Ottawa constitutional
ceremony. By their own
admission they came not to
praise either Caesar nor
Anthony, but the Queen of
Canada!

Lacking our diplomatc,

technological, literary,
scientific, or artistic verity
today among’ certain
correspondents, perhaps our
Statehood can be obtained
through a department store
catalog? We are used now to
obtaining everything else un-
Canadian there.
