North Vancouver District council has gone on record as supporting a hight rapid transit rail link to the North Shore. But most council members admit it is very unlikely such a link will be built in the near future. The discussion of a rapid transit link to the North Shore, at last week's council meeting, was sparked by a motion from Alderman Ernie Crist. Crist wanted council to instruct its representative on the GVRD to advocate and pursue the extension of the rapid transit to the North Shore at the Greater Vancouver Regional Distnct (GVRD) level and request he submit) a monthly progress report on the subject Cnst said wt was not the first time he had brought the subject to council and said he has “consistently tried to get rapid transit extended to the North Shore ~ “What we need tn the long term 1s LRT (Light Rapid Transat) and nothing cise.” pushing f Be LRT Crist said that many of the plans for development of downtown could not really go ahead until the whole region has rapid transit. Alderman Mary Segal backed Crist’s motion and said that while it is clear the North Shore is not a priority area for rapid transit, there is a need to plan 30 to 40 years down the road. Alderman Peter Powell, who is the District’s GVRD representative, said that the motion was imprecise. “The motion as it stands is the froth on a glass of beer,” he said. He said that the growth rates projected for the North Shore showed that rapid transit was not a pnority for the areca. District Mayor Don Bell agreed that the motion had to be changed but said council should “request that the GVRD include rapid transit to the North Shore in its planning.” With the agreement of Crist the motion was changed along the lines that Alderman John Lakes suggested. Councif decided to ex- press itself in favor of the extension of LRT to the North Shore and instruct its representatives (to the GVRD) on that basis. Alderman Peter Powell said he had no difficulty at all in supporting this.
