and I get a couple- -of hours to do minor repairs, or

feed the.ducks,-or think. Sometimes I-take one of
the kids with me, but during the winter it’s cold.

the boat is ‘warm enough to be comfortable for
them, it's time to ) ZO home.

So, last week L took some

_frierids instead, and we took

the boat out for a few hours
to éxperiment’ with <winter
sailing. It was very chilly
that day, with patterns of
frost glittering on the deck of
the vessel and small and not-
so-small ice cakes floating in
the saltchuck ‘alongside. I've

_ never seen that happen here

before. -

” The “portholes had a
translucent, rime of frost on
the inside,‘and- the oil for the-
stove was so thick with cold
that it seemed to take an
‘eternity to “flow into the
burner. The engine was hard
to start. . e

_ After we left the marina I
went on-deck to secure the
mooring lines and take in the
fenders. As we cleared the
last float .house the wind
became apparent, blowing
through my clothes as if they
weren't there. The sail
covers were stiff with frost
and hard to fold, and my

_ hands got very cold.

When we put the sails up
there ‘was the sound of
breaking glass. It was ice
falling out of the folds of the
genoa and shattering on’ the
deck. By the time we had
finished, deck duty and
to the ‘warmth’ of
the wheelhouse my fingers

were blue and stiff, and the.

We sailed all day, until the

light began to fail, and then

deck covering the sails and
rigging the mooring lines and
fenders. While it. had been
difficult to detect any heat.
from.the sun during the day

it was much easier to ap-_

preciate it after it had: set.

Even the pale midwinter sun -

generates quite a bit of heat.

DISCOMFORT EADED .

But, after we tied up’ and
made some hot'rums all the -

discomfort’ faded quickly.
Our noses dried up, the fire

crackled in the stove, and we

all felt flushed and healthy.

It's amazing how fast‘ one

forgets after the rough part is
through. I admit to saying —

‘many. times — if I ever get

through this I'll never do it
again. But half an hour after,
the unpleasant bits are
forgotten and _ pleasant
meniories remain.

May it be the same with
you in the New Year. I hope
that your 1978 discomforts
are soon forgotten, and that
all you take into the New.

_Firemen fight fire —.

on board ship

North Vancouver City
firemen took to the sea
December 30 to fight a fire
at Neptune Terminals.

The fire started in the hold
of the MV Island Sky which
was taking on a load of
alfalfa.

A fire
spokesman said the men had
to descend 30 of 40 feet into

the smoke-filled hold to-put

out the smouldering fire. ©

“One of the worst types of

He said there was no
danger of. an expolosion,
similar to what sometimes
occurs in grain clevators, but
said the thick white smoke
could have been seen for
some distance. .

Firemen were at the scene
for two hours, using small

tinguish the fire.

A possible cause may have
been friction on a loading
conveyer belt, the
spokesman said.
