A RECENTLY-released citizens survey commissioned by West Vancouver District shows a major- ity of West Vancouverites as being in favor of backyard burning. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter The telephone survey of 390 randomly-chosen households in West Vancouver, which was con- ducted by R.G. Wyckham Associates Ltd. from Nov. 17 to Dec. 10, 1989, also shows the ma- jority of West Vancouver residents as being very satisfied with the municipality and its services. in general, the survey, which is conducted every two years, showed increased resident satisfaction with municipal services and facilities over the results from 1987's survey. According to information glean- ed from the survey, most West Vancouverites: © are satisfied with municipal ser- vices; ¢ would not live anywhere else; © want a civic centre with arts fa- cilities; © are in favor of outdoor burning in the municipality; © and favor the selective removal of trees to retain views. But the survey also found that residents were not that satisfied with road maintenance when com- pared with resident satisfaction with other municipal services. And the survey also indicated that West Vancouverites find it in- creasingly difficult to get into rec- reation centre programs in West Vancouver. Of the 390 interviews used to compile the statistics in the survey, 84 per cent were homeowners, 66 per cent had lived in West Van- couver for more than 10 years and 80 per cent lived in single-family houses. A total of 52 per cent of the respondents were female and 48 per cent were male. The average age of the respondents was 53, and, in 42 per cent of the house- holds, the principal income earner was retired. Only 1.3 per cent of those surveyed said they would rather live in a community other than West Vancouver. In addition to documenting the general satisfaction of West Van- couver residents with their com- munity, the survey found that 62.5 per cent of respondents felt they were getting good value for their property taxes, and that 55 per cent would be willing to have their taxes increased only if the increase was necessary to maintain the cur- rent level of municipal services. A total of 31.3 per cent said they would prefer to maintain the cur- rent tax level and cut services.
