Distress call delay cited on slide inquest A COMMUNICATIONS breakdown was cited as being responsible for a 5'2- hour delay in mountaineers responding to a distress call to help rescue a party of hiking youths caught in an avalanche on Mount Sheer last November. An inquest jury last Thursday returned a verdict that 17-year-old Patrick Pattison - who had been among a hiking party of six boys and an instructor from Porteau Camp - died ac- cidentally. He was i became buried in an avalanche. The inquest heard the hiking party had been m “an obvious and large avalanche path” and the jury recom- mended that Porteau camp instructors receive regular instruction in moun- taincering risk management. Another recommendation was the B.C. Tel improve its handling of emergency calls.
