Bob Mackin News Reporter WHEN the Murder City Devils went into the studio with noted producer Jack Endino last year, drummer Coady Willis couldn’t have been happier. Endino recorded carly albums by the Melvins, Mudhoney and Nirvana and is credited with devising the grunge sound. “Jack’s really awesome, he's really Northwest in the best sense of the word,” said Willis, who was born in Bellingham but fives in Seattle with his bandmates. “His values as far as rock and roll music are down to earth and unpretentious. He just wants to make good rock and roll albums.” Willis said Endino was the ideal person to record the Murder City Devils’ second album, Empey Bottles Broken. Hearts. “He knows how dirty rock should sound. We've been influenced so much by bands like Mudhoney, the Stooges, we're not really a studio band as far as production goes. We want it to come off sounding like we do live as possible, and sound dirty and huge. He has lots of experience in that department.” Best of all, Endino has worked with Willis’ favourite drummers, like Dale Crover of the Melvins. “T tried to take as much knowledge from him as possible. We were working with a limited budget, so we didn’t have as much time as I would've liked to spend with drum teching and getting a drum sound, it "was kind of a fly by the seat of your-pants thing. It’s amazing to work with someone who’s worked with people I’ve been so influenced by.” The Murder City Devils’ sound is augmented by farfic> organ. In the stu- dio, bassist Derek Fudesco and guitarist Dann Gallucci share the keyboard duties while Nate Manny shuffles between guitar and bass. When the band begins a cross-Canada tour at the Starfish Room in Vancouver Wednesday, Leslie Hardy will be at the keys. “We just decided we wanted to incorporate that as a bigger part of the band, so we got Leslie in to play. It’s just part of the sound, it helps fill every- thing in. If anything we’re actually learning to use it now. “There’s a-lot going on, two guitars, a singer who doesn’t play any instru- ments (Spencer Moody), what he’s doing is completely independent of the music. It’s hard to keep it uncluttered and keep it simple. We're getting better at that.” NEXT WEEK: FEAR FACTORY VIDEO SHOOT . Unlike other bands, the Murder City Devils’ consider roadie Gabe an equal member. He’s even featured in the band’s publicity photos. “He spent most of his life becoming a human cartoon character,” Willis said. “When we go out on tour, he dresses for maximum visual impact. He has a certain outfit he has to wear, like no shirt, vest, and he has a collection of trucker hats. of “He’s our tour manager, he’s our driver, he works closely with our book- ing agent, he’s really a huge part of the band. He just goes above and beyond Busy July for band From Page 24 acclaim in 1994 but became a difficult act to market for its label, Sub Pop. All four mem- bers refused to give interviews and Hoerner wouldn’t accom- pany the band to its shows in California. Hoerner say's he had noth- ing against Californians. He was boycorting the state because it’s where the music business is centred. “T didn’t have any particu- lar ideal against California. It was sort of a decision of chaos. I'm a firm believer in chaos. That scemed a very random, lame thing to do.” * Aself-tided album was released a year later after the break-up. Goldsmith and Mendel joined ex-Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Pat Smear in the Foo Fighters. Goldsmith left chat band after its second alburn, but Mendel remained. He vowed to return to Sunny Day Real Estate, but opted to stay with the Foo Fighters instead. Bassist Jeff Palmer from the Mommyheads played bass in the studio, but Joe Skyward, ex of the Posies, was hired as the permanent bassist. The band played Richard’s on Richards last weekend and is gearing up for a busy july in a California festival to be headlined by Sonic Youth on the Fourth of July and a tour of Japan in mid-month. Then Hoerner hopes the band can retire to the studio for work on album number four. Needless to say it won’t be on Sub Pop.
