Dolls make wishes come true for kids | “MAKE a wish.” We’re a bit long in the tooth for those games now, eh, but it was part of our growing up — we would wish on the first star of the evening and on the candles on our birth- day cake. We took every opportu- nity to cross our fingers and close our eyes and think fer- vently “I wish it would hap- pen.” We always wished to be rich or somewhere else or a famous movie star, some- thing like that. So it is pretty nice that there are all sorts of grown- ups nowadays involved in doing just that for children in peril. The Make A Wish Foundation exists in various communities in the Lower Mainland and involves a lot of people who commit a great deal of time and inspi- ration to providing funds to help make wishes come true for the young afflicted. The workers this story is about are The Doll People. Their real name is Doll Treasures of Yesteryear, and the members are all doll fanciers who collect and restore old dolls, as well as make brand new ones. They together study the history of doll making, and the “how-to” of it, and then once a year they have a big tea party and display their year’s new work, hoping to make money for charitable groups. They have been going strong since 1964, and in those years their dolls have done a lot of good things. Their special concern is for sick children, who very much need cuddly compan- ions. Between the years 1979 and 1982, the group donat- ed $7,000 for a kidney dial- ysis machine to give Children’s Hospital. Sunny Hill has also been bettered by their efforts as well as the special Outreach Program. it will be a tittle different for them this year, because of venue, They have always before been able to arrange display space in one or more of the shopping malls but that has now got out of their range. To have such space in a mall nowadays requires out lay of a consid- erable sum of money to cover the insurance which is now mandatory. The mall authorities were having to take the rap for accidents happening on their premises, accidents occur- ring due to some alien space user, toddlers stepped on “sometimes Mom needs help at home when we can't be 4 there. So now it is necessary that displays and displayers be well covered in case of suit, and as you can imagine that puts a burden on alot of organizations made up of ordinary people. The fall months are his- torically the time when so many worthy groups try to gather in funds for their Christmas charities, and the rule will require re-thinking for many deserving and hard working committees. On the other hand, last year brought its own little miracle of joy, so who knows. A gentleman, a resident in North Vancouver, had won a trip to Disneyland for four, ina lottery of some sort. But he had already been to Disneyland a couple of times, he and his family, so he gave his wonderful ticket to the Doll people, who promptly gave it to the Make a Wish people. Lisa, a seven-year-old, was the lucky winner, taking her family with her, of course.
