Sunday, May 26, 1996 ~ North Shore News — 23 Children’s Festival at Vanier Parl Festival offers activities for young at heart BY LAYNE CHRISTENSEN Community Reporter THE organizers of ‘the Vancouver International Children’s Festival are promising that the 19th annual event offers something for everyone, includ- ing grown-ups. More than 80,000 youngsters and their parents are expected to fill the familiar red and white tents at Vanier Park May 27 through June 2. “Children’s entertainment when it’s at this level is for any age. fe goes right across the board,” said Joan Wellwood, commu- nications director for this year’s festivai and one of the orga- nizers of the first festival, in 1978. A roster of tafent has been assembied ‘to appeal to ages three to 14. On the mainstage ‘are: Canadian per- formers Charlotte Diamond, Fred Penner, Raffi, Cirque Eloize, Norman Foote, Lampoon Peppettheatre, Rick Scott, Richard Side and Melanie Ray. The international comunity is well rep- resented by Tam Teatromusica from Italy, Kazenoko-Kyushu from Japan, Marang African Music and Dance Theatre, Manipuri Cultural Arts Troupe from India, Pablo 66 Children’s entertainment when it’s at this level is for any age. It goes right across the board, 99 — Festival organizer Joan Wellwood Percusso from Australia and The Gizmo Guys from the United States. North Shore children’s entertainers will also be participating. North Van resident Kerry Burke will be there with 20 Casio keyboards for kids to play. The Capilano College music the:apy instructor promotes family entertainment through musical participation with her com- pany MakeMusic. Family members wil! have the chance to make music together by playing a variety of instruments. The Euphorics (U4X) will also be on-site. The a cappella quartet features the talents of Bing Jensen, Helen Davis, Steve Maddock and North Van resident Joani Bye. All are sea- soned performers, parents, instrumen- talists and musical arrangers. Other festival high- lights include the Boutevard Bandshell, featuring free musical perfor- mances, Festival Boulevard, featuring free activities includ- ing face painting, storytelling and tightrope workshops, and Festival Village, with arts and crafts for toddlers through teens. Tickets to the Mainstage performances are available at Ticketmaster, call 280-4444. Advance tickets are $5.50 to $9.50, Rush tickets are $7 to $12, 30 minutes before show time and subject to availability.
