Hospital defends doctor's decision A LIONS Gate Hospital spokes- man said a doctor made a med- ically appropriate decision in sending an injured 82-year-old woman home after five hours in hospital. By Anna Marie D'Angelo News Reporter Agnes Spink had bruised ribs, a cracked pelvis and a cut forehead as a result of a car crash on Nov 10. Spink’s grandson, Mike Ehly, was critical of the hospital for sending her home. . Said Dr. Stew Madill, vice-presi- dent of medical and diagnostic ser- _ Vices at Lions Gate Hospital, “The physician felt it was medically safe to " let her go home with home care (sup- / port)” Elly said Spink was sent home unable to sit up or use the washroom. :- Ehly. said he was appalled that an ‘elderly woman would not be kept ovemight for observation in that situ- ation. Liz Ehly, Spink’s daughter and Mike Ehly’s mother, had also been in the car accident and was “very shaken up.” Liz Ehly cared for Spink at home. The family had help from emergency home-care workers for four hours each day. Liz Ehly said she was exhausted by the experience. Meanwhile Madill said on Thursday that he had met with Mike Ehly that day. . “The only thing | think I need to apologize for in this situation is the delay (in responding to the con- cerns),” said Madill. Spink died in Lions Gate Hospital less than two months after the car crash. She passed away on Dec. 28 after undergoing surgery scheduled prior to the car accident. Madill said the closer-to-home philosophy of medical care, along with financial restraint that has fed to bed closures, has caused some emer- gency department doctors to make difficult decisions. to regret holiday feasting when all you need to do is give us a call... | right fitness program can help you shed those pounds and keep them ff.:;- hundreds of our members have done just that with the help of our friendly professional staff! .
