By Kate Zimmerman News Reporter Close to 600 people, most of them women, showed up at the cen- tre’s gymnasium to hear moderator and North Vancouver District Coun. Pam Goldsmith-Jones and six pan- elists discuss plans for the centre and focus on some of the health ser- vices such an institution might pro- vide, The health centre, according to its mission statement, is meant to be a base for a centralized team of health professionals and support persons offering “cost-effective, comprehensive, integrated, tradi- tional or alternative health educa- tion and health care” to women on the North Shore. Arlene Gladstone, executive director of Family Services of the North Shore, told the crowd the cen- tre would likely kick off with a pro- gram addressing menopause. The Women’s Health Centre Planning Committee believes that with 31,000 locai women between the ages of 35 and 60, the subject is of particular interest to the community. Gladstone said the centre would eventually offer weekly general and specific education sessions to an anticipated 2,000 women per year; peer support services; and individ- ual consultations with social work- — ers, counsellors, doctors and natur- opaths.: . She estimated that the centre would incur annual operating costs of $350,000 and a start-up capital - cost of $200,000. The planning committee hopes the $350,000 yearly costs will be underwritten by the government. The committee has launched a fund- raising campaign and proposes to charge fees for some services, such as educational sessions. Goldsmith-Jones emphasized the need for vocal support from the community if the government is to be persuaded to fund the project. She said financial contributions would lend credibility to the com: mittea’s fund-raising power and would prave women on the North Shore are prepared to pay for some services if such a centre were estab- lished. The concept of the Women's Health Centre has seized the imagi- nation of women working at a vari- ety of local agencies, including North Shore Health, North Shore Continuing Education, Family Services of the North Shore and Lions Gate Hospital. The campaign for the centre has won support from doctors, naturopaths, and agencies as diverse as the Fibromyalgia Association, the Breastfeeding Support Group and Midwives Association, Holistic Health Nurses, the North Shore Multicultural Society and Emily Murphy House.
