District eyes future transit services Need for better bus depot viewed a priority Annette Martin Contributing Writer A TRANSIT wish list presented to North Vancouver District Council on Nov. 6 contains more sweeping rec- ommendations than TransLink's five- year plan, Although the North Shore Area Transit Pian is the first far-reaching review of public trans- portation on the North Shore for many years, Donna Howes, assistant manager of transporta- tion and planning, identified “areas of concern” that the transportation planning department believes were not adequately addressed. Outlining a report, Howes recommended that council endorse the plan subject to the inclusion of the following items: Ba third ScaBus to be operational within five years. Service reliability is of concern. Existing ves- sels are now 22 years old. Maintenance needs and possite malfunction have to be taken into “consideration. A TransLink proposal to run the service at 12-minute intervals will cause further wear on the existing fleet. An option of remov- ing seating, to accommodate standees at peak periods has not been supported by market research, open houses, public advisory comunit- tee (PAC) comments or municipalities and could discourage ridership. A further recommendation was for council to support and recommend thar TransLink desig- nate the use of SeaBus for a single trip as a one- zone fare; Mcapital costs to implement transit priority mea- sures (giving buses priority on congested reads). ‘The opportunity to add more buses into the network is limited by congested municipal arte- rial roads, which are already operating at full capacity, especially ac the approach to both bridgeheads. Capital is needed for property acquisition to build transit: priority lanes.
