Forest industry finding efficient ways to save From page 253 Using forest resources more efficiently The forestry industry has also taken advantage of federai R&D support to develop more efficient ways to use energy. For example, large boilers in lumber mills are often fueled by wood residues, a process which in itself is en- vironmentally sound because a waste product is recovered and reused. . Building on this initial benefit, research engineers have developed new fuel-handling systems that measure the amount of moisture in the residues and adjust the boiler controls accordingly. As a result, wcod boilers burn the fuel more efficiently, with less fuel re- quired and reduced emissions presenis THE REPU cs OF YUGOSLAV DOCUMENTARY FILM narrated live in person by FRANK KLICAR NORTH VAN. Significant progress has been made in reducing the environmen- tal impacts of energy use and de- veloping aiternative sources of energy. Much work remains to be done. The federal Energy R&D Program is continuing to promote the related concepts of sustainable economic development, energy ‘diversification and environmental well-being. In support of these research ef- forts, Energy, Mines and Resources Canada’ recently an- nounced that it will establish a new research faboratory at Varen- nes, Quebec. This new laboratory will complement the department’s R&D facilities in other regions of Canada, and will focus primarily on research into energy upgrading and recycling of wastes, and natu- ral gas and hybrid systems.
