Number one ranked Cap College Blues win President’s Cup Defeat BCIT 4-1 at Swangard ut SELECTED THE THIRD annual Presi- _ dents’ Cup soccer match, pitting the Senior mens’ Capilano College Blues against the BCIT Cougars, was played last Thursday night under a beautiful fall sky at Swanguard stadium in Burnaby. By A.P. McCredie Sports Reporter The game featured some of the most skilled players on the college circuit as the number-one ranked college team in the country, Capilano, defeated the fourth- ranked Cougars by a 4-1 margin. * Coached by first-year skipper Jim Easton, a player with the Vancouver 86ers, the Blues cap- tured the lead in the three-year series, two games to one. The Cougars won the inaugral Cup, and the Blues evened the competiton last year, a season which saw them repeat as national college champions. The first half opened with most ef the play confined to BCIT’s half, with Capilano strikers, in particular Travis Turner, relent- lessly running down balls in both corners and hitting dangerous crosses in front of the BCIT net- minder. The Cougars were on the heels of their cleats for most of the half, desperately clearing passes intended for the charging Blues. At the midway period of the half a rush by the Blues’ Gavin Freye resulted in the first score of the night. Freye took a short lead pass at the penalty line from teammate Danny Pecile, deked a charging Dillon Wono, the Cougar’s keeper, and fired a strike into the empty goal. Following the goal, BCIT pick- ed up their offensive game and came close on a great move by Jason Cattermole charging in from the left side. A sliding Blues defender, Darren Nott, saved what was sure to be a goal. With about five minutes left in the opening half, the Cougars got lucky in front of the Blues goal as the Capilano defense momen- tarily lost their focus. Ken Camp- bell of BCIT pounced on a loose GAME OF © THE WEEK ball in the goal mouth and one- timed a hard tow shot into the netting. Visibly angry at their brief loss of concentration, the Blues played out the remainder of the half with their greatest intensity of the game, rewarded in the final minute when Simon Tait hit a crossing ball into a crowd in front of the Cougars net. Blues three- year veteran Tony Mobilio trap- ped the ball and made no mistake, giving Capilano College a 2-1 lead going into the focker room. The second half opened much as the first half closed, with the Blues putting together some in- spired passing plays, and the Cougars beginning to show their frustrations. Only some excellent goaltending by Wono kept the score close. The Blues finally put one past the stingy BCIT keeper when Mobilio beat Wono on a breakaway, potting his second marker of the game. The remainder of the game saw the Blues backliners clearing every Cougar foray into the penalty area, effectively shuting down any offensive threat BCIT could muster. With less than three minutes to play in the game, Wono let his team’s frustrations show by shouider- blocking a rushing Capilano forward, resulting in a red-card ejection for himself and a penalty shot for the hat-trick hungry Mobilio. Substitute BCIT netminder, coming in stone cold, had no chance at Mobilio’s high bullet shot. The game ended 4-1 Capilano, the same margin of victory the Blues managed against the Cougars last year in the Presi- dents’ Cup. Mobilio, with three goals and outstanding play all game, was the Blues’ MVP, while Jeff Roberts picked up MVP honours for BCIT. Afl proceeds from the Presi- dents’ Cup go the United Way.
