West Vancouver-Garibaldi MLA David Mitchell, along with the mayors of Pemberton, Whistler, Squamish, Lions Bay and West Vancouver, will meet with Transportation and High- ways Minister Art Charbonneau today to discuss the issue. ‘*Improving and upgrading the existing highway is the most effec- tive way to solve the immediate transportation problems facing the diverse communities within the Sea-to-Sky corridor,’’ said Mit- chell. He added that the need for an improved road is demonstrated by the highway's heavy traffic vol- ume. Mitchell said the route from Horseshoe Bay io Squamish alone carries 12,060 vehicles per day compared with the 8,300 vehicles per day that travel the Coquihalla Highway. *“We now have achieved an un- precedented agreement on the highway,’ said Mitchell. . “I’m very pleased all of the municipalities in my constituency have rallied around this issue. It’s the lifeline of the whole region.”’ He added that safety is a para- mount concern and continued highway upgrading will keep it a viable transpor‘ation route for many years to come. “This is a perfect opportunity for the provincial government to send out a strong signal that it cares about the safety of the motoring public and = supports economic development in the region,’’ said Mitchell. Mitchell said that between 1982 and 1990, 1,400 accidents were reported along the Sea-to-Sky highway and that more than 35% of them involved casualties.
