The story is simplicity itself. A
Dalmatian, Pongo, gets his
songwriting master (or “his pet’
as he narrates), Roger, out of
bachelorhood and, in the process,
meets his own spotted match,

Then one evening dunny
“wwalkies,”” two hired Cockney
crooks swipe the pups. When
human efforts tail to locate the
dognapped brood, it's Pango and
Perdita to the rescue (vith the
help of a network of pooches and
barnyard animals).

As simple as the story is. the vie
sual execution is delightful. There
are a fot of great scenes involving
the puppies (whose spots must
have been an animator’s
nightmare, even with the then-
new Xerox process), but in the
Disney tradition, there’s much
more charm than cuteness.
There’s even a few satirical shots
at television tossed in for zing.

The straight-forward plot allows
plenty of room for the colorful
characters from Disney's most
vivid villainess to a stodgy shaggy
dog of military bearing and his

NORTH VANCOUVER-based Me-
trapolis Dance will perfarm their
new work, Taped Messaves, at the
upcoming Stein Valley Festival,
Aug. 2-5 at Seabird Island. .

The piece, which incoporates a
telephone motif, taped-recorded
messages and human heart beat, is
a comment on modern. society,
says Christine Elsey, who
choreographed, directed and per-
forms in the work. ‘It’s about
alienation of the mind and spirit,
about the rat race we live in,” says
Elsey.

ner, has created an original score
for the work.

The Stein Festival pertormance
will be the four-member group's
first public appearance this year.
Elsey suspended activity while she
was pregnant. She has since piven
birth to.a baby girl.

The Stein program, which Elsey
describes as a menu of ducts,
solos and group dancing, also in-
cludes Anna Haltrecht’s Dancing
the Voodoo Down and Extasis Y
Muerte.

Metropolis Dance will be per-
forming in the festival’s new 650-
seat Alternative and Family
Theatre.
