U-16’s heading for Spain CANADA’S TOP under-16 tennis players —~ with three of them from the North Shore — have qualified for the World Youth Cup finals to be held September: in Barcelona. The Canadian squad finished second to the U.S. after a six- country (five for girls) qualifying tournament at Jericho Tennis Club last week. The top two countries from the North and Central American zone championships qualified for the world finals. West Vancouver provided the Canadian boys No. 1: anu 2 players in Russell Stuart and Chris Santoso while North Vancouver's Sonya Jeyaseelan teamed up with Renata Kolbovic of Vancouver. Although the local teams were defeated 3-0 (two singles and a doubles match) Sunday by the U.S., both teams started the tour- fament with a perfect start — girls with a 3-0 win over El Salvador while the boys registered a 3-0 win over Guatemala. On Friday, the girls repeated with a 3-0 win over Mexico while the boys handed Mexico a 2-1 score. Chena swimmers at int’] meet THE CHENA Swim Club of North Vancouver sent 19 swim- mers to the Edmonton Keyano swim meet last month. The Chena swimmers were competing against international competition from the U.S. as well as the Russian and Japanese na- tional age group teams. In a long meet against tough competition all Chena swimmers recorded best times. Finalists were Vaughn Thomp- gon who won a silver medal in the 200-inetre breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 100-metre breaststroke; Litza Anderson, who reached the finals in the 200-metre backstroke, the 100-metre backstroke, and the 400-metre freestyle; and Marek Hejduk who made the finals in the 200-metre freestyle, the !00-metre freestyle, the 100-metre butterfly, and the 50-metre butterfly.
