It came from British Columbian F.G. Marsh of Castlegar and should be required reading for al! Mulroneys, Vander Zaims, Ger- don Campbells and their realtor pals who solemnly lecture us. whe “Racism,” writes reader Marsh, “is not the problem in Vancouver. “It is true that the great influx of Asian money, particularly in the real estate market, has infuriated many people, but the origin of the money is hardlv relevant. If it came from Britain, from Ger- many, from Australia, from the U.S., from the U.S.S.R., the feel- ing would be the same. “In the social climate of today anyone with the temerity to describe things as they are runs the risk of being labeled a racist. “‘What we see taking place here in British Columbia is thot the men and women who have buiit this country with their labor and their own resources, men and women who have gone to war for their country, are being forced out of their homes by new owners, some not even citizens, who bring nothing with them but money, money that can buy little or nothing of value in the lands from which they bring it. ‘*When this foreign money is put into a finite market it brings about the conditions held by the classical economists as being responsible for inflation — too much money chas- ing too few goods. In this type of inflation those with the surplus money naturally exchange it for tangible goods, in this case, land and buildings, but prin: orily land. “In this situation, it |; under- standable that those Canadian citi- zens being priced out of their own markets by foreigners bringing in LAYING ON A GUILT TRIP .,.Brian Mulroney, Vancouver Mayor Gordon Campbell. Back the bark pulp mill discharge controls should raise cheers Tes PROVINCIAL eavironment minisiry’s new along Howe Sound shores. But ail those concerned with the release of organochlorines into our coastal waters will have to hope that the government’s environmental bite is as Serious as its new environmental! bark. Announced by Environment Minister Bruce Strachan, the new centrols apply to all chiorinated compounds from the 17 B.C. pulp mills that use chlo- rine in their pulp bleaching process, including mills at Port Mellon and Woodfibre. Mills will be required te reduce dramatically the discharge of chlorinated organics in two stages starting Dec. 31, 1991. But while the controls represent some of the most Stringent dioxin regulations in Canada, they will simply be more hollow statistics if they are not backed up with equally stringent enforcement. And though Canfor has said the »°.’ controls will present no problem for the company’s new Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Ltd. mill at Port Mellon, Woodfibre miil representatives have called the deadlines unrealistic and impossible. Add to that the government’s abysmal record of en- forcing its previous environment standards: over the past three years a paltry $35,000 has been collected by the prevince from polluters. The Socred’s new serious environment stance will only be taken seriously by the public if violaters are actually made to pay via jail terms or heavy fines or both, not just made to scramble for betier excuses and better public relations campaigns. their worthless (at home) money will resent and blame the investors as being responsible for their predicament. “But the real villains are largely Canadians themselves, particularly those getting rich in paper money by selling off our country, and those in some of our governments who not only condone this activity but promote it and try to persuade us that it is a good thing for the welfare of ourselves and our coun- try, when clearly it is not.”’ (The italics are mine). ““We who see things this way,”’ the writer concludes, ‘‘may be called many things. Patriots, Canada-firsters, visionaries, ideal- ists, nationalists, but please, not racists.”’ ene It’s too much to hope that such stzaight talk will cut any ice with our temporary masters presiding over the demise of the Vancouver we have knowm. But thanks just the same, Mr., Mrs. or Ms. Marsh, for telling it like it is! neo TAILPIECES: HELP WANTED -- Two West Van tubas urgently seek two mouths w/lungs, good working order, attached.
