Bargain appliances
may not be good buy

GARAGE SALES can be a lot of
fun, but beware!

The electrical appliance you first
think is a bargain could turn out to
be a disaster.

According to CSA's Audits and
Investigations group, a woman
bought a used electric blanket at a
garage sale. That night she let her
eight-year-old son use it.

The blanket caught fire, but
luckily the boy escaped uninjured.
Investigation showed that the
blanket was 28 years old and the
internal wiring’s insulation had
severely deteriorated.

In another case, a couple pur-
chased a coffee maker. It looked
like a modern unit, but the first
time they used it the appliance
caught fir

Investigation revealed that the
coffee maker had been improperly
serviced. The thermal cutoff
(back-up thermal protector) had
been removed, the thermostat was
worn out and had welded closed.

This produced unregulated heat
resulting in a fire. The coffee
maker was 12 years old.

In yet another case, a deep fat
fryer was purchased and the first
time it was used it ignited the
cooking oil. Upon examination it

was discovered the thermostat had
been damaged and did not regulate
the oil temperature.

The deep fryer was 18 years old.
Since 1983, deep fat fryers have
been subjected to new test re-
quirements that prevent this sort of
incident from happening even if
the thermostat fails.

The most commonly used elec-
trical products you can buy at
garage or yard sales are power
tools, kettles, frying pans, radios
and record players.

The dangers inherent in buying
used appliances are many — you
don’t know how old they are, what
abuse they have taken, what ser-
vicing has been done or the condi-
tion of the electrical components.
Another point to consider is that
newer products may be certified to
new or revised standards which
make them safer to use.

If you do buy a used electrical
appliance, ‘tig common-sense thing
to do would be to have it checked
out by a qualified repair shop or a
factory-authorized repair depot.

For those who might buy some-
thing like this, consider if the price
you would pay for it plus the cost
of having it checked ave: is worth
it.
