GSL MINOR SOCCER Browns victor THE NORTH Shore Browns con- tinued a long-standing tradition recently when they won the Gor- don Sturtridge League minor divi- sion championship in a game at Norgate Park. In a hard-fought contest against the West Van Broncos, the Browns emerged 24-6 winners, the second time in three years that the Browns have won the title. But the game was closer than the score indicated. The Broncos, who dominated league play, had beaten the Browns decisively in two previous meetings, and were heavily favored to win the encounter. After receiving the opening kickoff, the Broncos were invinci- ble, scoring in just three plays over Ous 50 yards. The game looked like another lopsided Bronco victory. But the Browns refused to quit, taking the ensuring kickoff and marching up the field with outstanding efforts from their three backfielders. An unconverted touchdown tied the score at 6-6. Costly penalties resulted in numerous third-and-long situations which the Broncos could not con- vert. The Browns continued to play the hard-nosed ball-control game that had been their trade- mark all season. The Broncos showed their power in an outstanding goalline stand, See Browns Page 31 en wildcard teams for this year. Sentinel, an ‘A’ school by popu- lation in girls’ volleyball that chose to play ‘AA’, is the first ‘A’ school ever to win the B.C. ‘AA’ gold medal. Sentinel won the ‘A’ tourney in 1984 and were second in the ‘AA’ in both 1985 and 1986. This season’s overall won-lost record in matches is 63-7, in- cluding first places in four invita- tional tournaments at Prince Geerge, U.B.C., University of Victoria and Sutherland, and se- conds at New Westminster and Longview, Wash. Four of those seven losses were to Sutherland, which Sentinel defeated six times. Only one North Shore school was eligible to make it to the B.C. tournament, despite the quality of the teams, and this did not change in spite of proposals to add OPEN 9:30 - 9 p.m. Monday - Friday 9:30 - 6 p.m. Saturday 2533 ’GIFY CEATIFICATES AVAILABLE: -* GUARANTEED FOR LIFE Premium brake pads and shoes are guaranteed for as long as you own your vehicle when insialled at a Canadian Tire Auto Centre.
