10 ~ Wednesday, inquiring reporter Stephen Barrington Cap College February 18, 1987 - North Shore News HOW ABOUT one large North Vancouver municipality? For vears, local residents and politicians have been kick- ing around an idea to join North Vancouver City and North Vancouver District to create one unified municipality. Founded in 1907, the city is surrounded on these sides by the district, which was founded in 1891. Supporters of the plan say a unified North Vancouver would mean more efficient government, taxations, roads and public services for the whole area. On the other hand, opponents claim such a move will increase costs for cily residents when their taxes increase to fund higher district expenses. This week, Inquiring Reporter wants to know how people feel about amalgamation. A unified NV City aad District? North Van gets grant to build Sechelt campus NORTH VANCOUVER’S Capilano College has received a $450,000 grant from the provincial government to build a permanent Sechelt campus. . College president Dr. Doug Jar- dine said the new facility will be .6,300 square feet and have four permanent classrooms compared with the three classrooms in the building currently leased by the college. He said construction should start next month and is scheduled to be completed in time for the fall semester. The facility, he said, will include the aqua culture centre operated in the current campus building and offer various adult basic education courses and provide a_ career resource centre for the arca. “What we will be doing is trying to respond to the needs of the community,’ Jardine said. “You know, a place like Squamish might not need five philosophy courses. A course in silviculture might be more beneficial.’’ He said he had made a pitch to the provincial government several years ago to allow the college to build up equity by buying a per- manent campus rather than simply continue paying rent for the Sun- shine Coast Regional District building currently leased for the campus. The government grant, which will cost no.more than the price of leasing the old facility, will cover all costs of buying the property, which is just under an acre, and constructing the new facility. ® & Equipment Ski Sweaters Terry Mabillard North Vancouver First of all you might combine West Van and and combine it all.
