AUSTRALIA'S NORTHERN TERRITORY Follow ENTERTAINER Paul Hogan has already made a name for himself and Australia in Canada with the Foster’s Lager commercials and more recently has become a box office hit with Crocodile Dundee. The charming Aussie has in- troduced millions of Canadians to the warmth and friendliness of the Australians, and, in the case of Crocodile Dundee, to some of his -FOocodile country’s spectacular secvnery and exotic wildlife. The majority of the focation filming was done in Australia’s Top End, the far north of the Nor- thern Territory. The pub scenes in the fictitious ‘*Walkabout Creek” were shot near Mount Isa in North Queensland and the young American reporter’s base at the start of the film was the famous cosmopolitan capital of New South Eat cheaply in Nevada From page 66 fluence the cards the dealer will draw if she must ‘‘hit’’ her hand. i would not want to be the amateur sitting in third base, hit- ting a 17 with the face card that would have broken the dealer’s hand. Stay away from tables where big money is being wagered — at least until you’ve got some skill. Table limits are posted on every table. On some the minimum bet is $5. These are far too expensive for beginners. ‘Alas, $1 tables have all but disappeared but there are lots of $2 tables — more mid-week than on weekends. 1 like to choose a table where the cards are dealt face down, from a single deck and by hand not from a shoe. A shoe is a box where the dealer stashes up to four decks and peels them out as she needs them. There’s just too darn many cards out for the player to have any idea what his odds are. 1 also look for a dealer with a good stack of chips alongside her tray of money. These are tips. Tips are given to the dealer by players who are winning. If the players are winning, the dealer is losing. This is a good person to play against. eae Now, for. those who know Reno, just a few observations. *Of the main clubs the Cal-Neva and the Eldorado are still giving the best exchange on Canadian money but only if you’re gambl- ing. Currently it’s 20: per cent where it’s as high as 30 per cent elsewhere. They will atso cash $50 bills where at one time the best they’d do is $20. *The Hilton used to have an ex- cellent buffet dinner. No more. It’s $5.99 — overpriced .— and mediocre. *Fitzgerald’s used to have a mediocre buffet for $3.99. It’s still $3.99 but we heard raves about it from other players. *The Cal-Neva still has an ex- cellent 99¢ breakfast — I think it’s the best deal in Reno. Alas, their coffee has degenerated into the same watery slop served everywhere else. *The MGM Grand has been renamed the Bally Grand. They are still presenting Hello Hollywood in their showroom and it’s great entertainment. The cocktail show is $18.75 including two drinks. 1 don’t know what they're charging for the dinner show but don’t buy it. We were told by several people that the food isn’t worth the price. I have a feeling that the Bally may be in a bit of trouble. It’s an enormous hotel and casino, but it sure was quiet the night we were there. There are frequent shuttle buses (free) from the Cal-Neva to the Bally Grand. *The tour we took stayed at the Colonial Motor Inn just a couple of short blocks to the Virginia Street casinos. I’d not hesitate +9 stay there again, as it’s clean, well-run and the rooms are big. Our room was paid for as part of the tour package, but we were in- structed to check out on the day of departure at 10:30 a.m. Since the bus wasn’t leaving un- til7 p.m. that night we didn’t want to lose our home base. For $24 we got to keep it. I'd certainly recommend that move — we got on the bus far less tired than those who had to rattle around Reno all day. Especially since | hit such a los- ing streak that afternoon that if 1 hadn’t had an armchair .and a TV set I’d be again muttering nonsense about ‘‘how you play the game.”’ Wales, Sydney, where we saw the well-known Opera House and Harbour Bridge from her office window. For most, however, the scenes in Crocodile Dundee's natural habitat were the most spectacular. What the audience saw as vast tropical areas, populated with strange birds and huge water buffalo, were, in fact, all contained within Kakadoo National Park, just) two hours Presents IRELAND Traveltale film narrated in person by Willis Butler Van.
